Welcome to GERC

Hello and welcome to our new blog, the GERC Diary.

Allow us to introduce ourselves. We are the GeoEnergy Research Centre, GERC for short, and we are a co-established research centre between two world-leading organisations: The University of Nottingham (UoN) and the British Geological Survey (BGS).

GERC is comprised of a multitude of international scientists working in many different research domains including engineering, chemistry, physics, geology and maths to name a few. Sometimes we even combine to become geochemists, geophysicists and engineering geologists!

Our centre was created with the aim of combining BGS and UoN expertise, experiences and resources to investigate new areas of research around the theme of rock-fluid interactions, pertaining to energy. Our goal is to address the global energy trilemma; affordability, security and sustainability.

To elaborate further our research will include carbon capture and storage, coal bed methane, underground coal gasification, enhanced oil recovery, shale gas resources, groundwater security, gas hydrates, underground gas storage, radioactive waste storage and geothermal energy.

We currently have collaborations with strategic overseas partners in the USA, China and Europe and are working to expand our portfolio even more.

But back to our blog, what can you expect to find on here?

We hope this blog will provide a more personable insight into GERC and how our scientific research community operates, so expect a wide range of posts from us.

We'll take you along with us on some of our fieldwork, conferences and trips overseas, have our scientists introduce themselves and their research interests, explain more behind the science regarding the work GERC does plus you can enjoy guest posts from our GERC ambassadors and our invited speakers who take part in our GERC Invited Lecture Series. Please feel free to get involved and leave some comments telling us what you would like to see.

You can follow us on social media too.

COMING SOON: Keep an eye out for a post from Dr. Derek Taylor, Former Energy Advisor to the European Commission. He recently gave an illuminating lecture on the nuclear energy enigma and how nuclear power could help keep our lights on. If you missed our live stream you can watch it again.

Thanks for reading and we hope to see you back here again soon.

Whilst we have your attention! Fancy doing a PhD with GERC?
Take a look at our current studentships. You'll have access to dual supervision from UoN and BGS staff plus shared access to facilities and laboratories at both institutions. Applications close 31/8/15.
